What the numbers cover

In New York, liability coverage must be at least 25/50/10. Each person hurt has a $25,000 limit. Everyone hurt in one crash has a $50,000 limit. Damage to other people's property has a $10,000 limit.

These limits often don't cover the full cost of medical bills or a newer car. Any amount above those limits may be claimed from you, which is why many drivers buy 100/300/100. The average annual cost for a liability policy in New York is $1,243.

Driving with no insurance

If you drive uninsured in New York, you may lose your license and registration. Getting them back may mean submitting proof of insurance over several years.
