What you still pay with the minimum
New York requires liability coverage of at least 25/50/10. That's $25,000 per injured person, $50,000 for everyone injured in a single crash, and $10,000 to cover damage to another person's property.
With liability, the other people are the ones who get paid. Unless you add collision coverage, you pay for repairs to your own car.
When crash costs exceed your limits, the remaining amount can be claimed from you. Paying for higher limits usually costs far less than the extra protection you gain.
