Michigan rules for SR-22
After a serious offense, Michigan asks for a financial-responsibility insurance certificate. The insurer files it with the Michigan Department of State.
If an at-fault driver lacks insurance and cannot pay a court judgment for damages, their license is suspended until payment is made. To receive restricted licensing, you need financial-responsibility insurance and a partial-payment agreement.

How it affects your price
The filing on its own doesn't cost much.; the offense behind it is what raises the premium.
The state rate guides we use show that one at-fault accident raises the price to about 1.5 times its former amount.
With Michigan's liability average of $831, the yearly cost would be about $1,247.
Ways to get a filing
- Ask your insurer to submit the form to the state; not all companies do this.
- Don't own a car? A non-owner policy can include the filing.
- Keep your policy paid. The state receives notice of a lapse, which can restart the clock.
