Virginia SR-22 rules
An SR-22 / FR-44 filing is what Virginia asks for after a serious offense, and it must be kept for 3 years.
Virginia requires an SR-22 for unsatisfied judgments, an uninsured-vehicle suspension or falsified insurance certification. It also applies when you fail to prove insurance under insurance monitoring and after certain serious convictions.

The FR-44 filing after a DUI
DUI-related convictions make Virginia require an FR-44, and the FR-44 liability limits run twice as high as the SR-22 minimum limits.
How it affects your price
The filing costs little on its own; what raises the premium is the offense behind it.
The state rate guides we use show one at-fault accident raising a price about 1.5 times.
With a Virginia liability average of $691, that works out to about $1,037 a year.
Getting a filing
- Ask your insurer to send the form to the state; not every company does that.
- Don't own a car? The filing can be carried on a non-owner policy.
- Keep the policy paid up. The state hears about a lapse, and that can restart the clock.
