What does each number pay for?
In Hawaii, the minimum liability coverage is 40/80/20. Each person hurt is covered up to $40,000. Everyone hurt in one crash is covered up to $80,000, while damage to other people's property is covered up to $20,000.
Medical bills and the cost of a newer car often exceed these limits. Claims for amounts above these limits can be made against you. Because of this, many drivers select 100/300/100 coverage instead. Liability policies in Hawaii cost $477 per year on average.
Driving without insurance
Your license and registration may be taken away if you drive uninsured in Hawaii. To recover them, you may have to submit proof of insurance for several years.
