What you're still paying with the minimum

In Iowa, at least 20/40/15 liability coverage is required. The required amounts are $20,000 for each injured person, $40,000 for everyone injured in one crash and $15,000 when other people's property is damaged.

Liability coverage pays other people. You pay for fixes to your own car unless you add collision.

Any amount beyond your limits in a crash can be claimed from you. Raising your limits usually costs far less than the extra protection it buys.
