How it affects what you pay
The filing itself is cheap. What raises the premium is the offense behind it.
A single at-fault accident, our state rate guides show, raises the price about 1.5 times.
With Maine liability averaging $446, that works out to about $669 a year.
Getting one
- Ask your insurer to submit the form to the state, though not every company does.
- Don't have a car? A policy for non-owners can carry the filing.
- Keep paying the policy. If the policy lapses, the state hears about it and the clock can restart.
